Bioacoustics is the only international peer-reviewed journal devoted to the study and recording of animal sounds. It publishes reports of original research and review articles, commentaries from major figures in the field, profiles of research groups, relevant conference announcements and abstracts, reviews of equipment, books and recordings, information on wildlife sound archives and lists of recent publications in the field of bioacoustics.
The BLB houses one of the largest collections of recorded animal sounds in the world. Founded by the late Dr. Donald Borror, Professor of Entomology and Zoology at The Ohio State University, the collection contains approximately 23,200 recordings of over 1000 species of animals. A current catalog is available for your browsing.
The CFB aspires to preeminence in education, research, and service through the science and technology of bioacoustics. In support of this mission, the CFB carries on an active research program, develops and teaches undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education courses both on and off the TAMU-CC campus. Additionally, the CFB provides service by maintaining a growing and accessible systematic collection of digital audio recordings of natural and man-made sounds. The CFB's collection is available to researchers throughout the world.

My current research project is focused toward analyzing the similarities and differences between the whistle repertoires of three geographically isolated bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) populations. One of the geographic areas where I collected Tursiops whistles was Belize, C.A. (see Belize below) and I am currently establishing a protocol for collecting whistle repertoires in the San Diego study area. I expect this research to evolve into my Master's thesis project in SDSU's Interdisciplinary Master's Program in Animal Behavior.

Interdisciplinary Master's Program: Boat-based behavioral research studying the diurnal and nocturnal movements and behavior of Pacific coast bottlenose dolphins
R.H. Defran is the Director of the Cetacean Behavior Laboratory. He obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1970 and has been a professor in the Psychology Department at San Diego State University since September 1970. Dr. Defran's research and teaching specialties are Animal Behavior and Research Methodology.

Survey of cetaceans in the Gulf of Mexico
I am assisting Greg Campbell with bottlenose dolphin whistle analyses. We are using the acoustic analysis software called Canary on a Macintosh to analyze Tursiops whistles from Southern California Bight, Western Caribbean (Belize), and Gulf of Mexico populations. Our hope is to determine whether different whistle dialects exist across these three populations.
