The Center for Coastal Studies was founded in 1976 as an independent nonprofit, membership-supported institution dedicated to research, public education, and conservation programs for the coastal and marine environments. Located at the tip of Cape Cod in the midst of a variety of fragile habitats, the Center has become internationally known for its progressive and innovative programs and scientific research endeavors. The mission of the Center for Coastal Studies is to conduct scientific research with emphasis on marine mammals of the western North Atlantic and on the coastal and marine habitats and resources of the Gulf of Maine.
